VOLUME COLLECTION gathers Avant-Garde and contemporary artists, various artistic concepts created as books or it is mediated through other artistic media. A books is thought of as a symbolic and real (physical/printed and immaterial/virtual) form which through centuries influences the dynamic of the reality of social and cultural relations, processes of information and communication, writing and erasing of knowledge and thought.
It contains a wide array of artistic expressions, forms, formats and mediums, from physical printed forms, with a special chapter dedicated to artist books (book-object, book-artwork, book-theoretical work), to less obvious and expected trasfers and translation of a book to a medium of video, net-art, performance, action, photography or conceptual painting.
In the complex relation of image and text, visual and verbal games, we have the intriguing topics from the art world and the society in the last two decades, the challenges of the information age, problems of Neo-Liberal Capitalism and transition, the dangers of religious conflicts, stepping on the freedom of speech and press. From the pioneering, Neo-Avant-Garde works of the 60s and 70s of the 20th c. which are exhibited, a book represents the voice of freedom, critical and creative thought, with which you also challenge the traditional stance and evaluation of an artworks, and try to reach as broad of a public as possible, outside of the regular visitor to museums and galleries.
The artistic practices presents in this project communicate with a clear individual point of view. They show the critical stance opposing the dominant political and cultural order, as well as the dominant paradigms in the art world, market systems and theories of art, often aware of the contradictions of their own role and the unclear position of art in contemporary society.
Inside the seventy or so "books" of Croatian and foreign artists, collectives and artist groups, you can read, hear and see the interpretation of the global and local context:
a critique of the institution that is the national library award "Kiklop" for the hit book of the year in the medium of conceptual painting; video-documentation of an art protest against taxing books; a manual for post-graduated in Croatia as a quick class on criminal job occupations; the ideological and religious book of a contemporary prophet-artist; potentially killer book-brick; documentation on the bronze soldier who divided Russian and Estonia public; a book on the impossibility of integrating and politicis of the Europea Union; a hundred suggestions for the realization of impossible art projects...
