Sven Stilinović

Sven Stilinović (Zagreb, 1956) is a contemporary artist of post-conceptualist orientation, whose work includes photography, implementation of objects, installations, scenery design in various materials and techniques, art activities and performances, which are regularly documented in the medium of photography and video. The beginnings of his artistic work are associated with the founding of Grupa šestorice autora (Group of Six Authors) (1975-1981), of which he was a member.

Combining the principles of non-conventionality, anarchism and absurdity with the procedure based on the identification of thoughts and behavior, Sven Stilinović created an impressive artistic oeuvre that has always aspired to abolishment of the established boundaries, experiment and social criticism. He was equally interested in the socio-political reality in which he lives, the relationship between society and art, the social position of artists as well as the artistic creativity that is closer to the idea and reflection rather than the aestethic value.

The installation Zastava (The Flag) from 1985, according to the author's anarchistworldview, turns the iconography of the state’s most important symbol into a field of pain, presented with the formation of a flag with tens of densely arranged razor blades, notorious and respectable for their exceptional hardness and sharpness, with whom they "reward" every wrong move with bloody and painful consequences.
