Natalia LL

Natalia LL (1937, Żywc, Poland. Lives and works in Wrocław, Poland) is a provocative multi-media artist, especially active in the field of performance art, film, video, photography and photographic installations and native art. In her work the questions of art, freedom, Eros and Thanatos overlap in an immanent critique of consumerism as a suspension valve of modern civilization based on repression, manipulation and spiritual servitude. Natalia LL found and implemented the sphere of unlimited resistance in an artistic practice based on identifying, defining and exploring the area of intimacy. The author considers intimacy a magical sphere of the reality of imagination.

The film Consumer Art simultaneously deconstructs the male cultural domination based on a stereotypical heterosexual matrix of western civilization, and fetishization of the western consumer society in poor material conditions present in Poland in the early seventies. At that time simple market goods as bananas and some types of salami were, as foreign products, unavailable or even prohibited. By identifying the unavailable consumer product with a phallic symbol, the political repression reveals in her work as a construct derived from the male domination in social relations.
