Marijan Molnar (Reka near Koprivnica, 1951) is a post–conceptual artist and one of the protagonists of new artistic practice in Zagreb. In his creativity he practices artistic nomadism which eventually includes all the new technolo- gies and combines painting, installation, video, ambiences, public actions, photography, site–speciic and online installations. Although he was formally not a member of any of the artistic groups of the late seventies, he was very close to and an active collaborator of the artists gathered around the Gallery Podroom (1978–1980) and Gallery PM. For the Democratization of Art is a cycle of works initiated in 1979 with the action of collecting signatures under the declaration of the same name on the former Square of Republic in Zagreb. In Studentski list (Student newspaper) in 1981 a photography of the same name was published, showing the artist dressed as a terrorist standing in front of the inscription “For the Democratization of Art”, complemented by a ive–pointed star. Molnar did a graiti with the same text in the underpass. hat same year, at an exhibition in ŠKUC in Ljubljana an installation with the same inscription on a red lag with a white ive–pointed star was exhibited, and then a large banner on the facade of SKUC in Zagreb, and a graiti and a banner in Belgrade. By adopting the language and methods typical of ideo- logical manipulation like collecting signatures, agitation or anarchist information, combined with state and party symbols, Molnar directly pointed to the connection between art and culture and the wider social context, as well as the strategy of marginalization and ignorance of the new artistic practice. he latter was conducted by public cul- tural institutions because of its critical discourse, and with the excuse that it was deviant and destructive behavior.
