After its inauguration at the former Varteks factory buildings and municipal museums of Varaždin, the retrospective exhibition of Aleksandar Srnec under the title Present Absence opened on January, 17.2010 at the new building of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb.
The retrospective was organized by the Marinko Sudac Collection and City of Varaždin in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Municipal Museum of Varaždin and Varaždin Gallery Center.
The exhibition is one more opportunity to see in a single institution the fascinating oeuvre that has discretely marked the second half of the XX century in Croatian visual arts, especially its segments oriented towards experiment and exploration as well as merging of the various disciplines. Paintings, prints, lumino-kinetic objects, site specific interventions in interiors and public spaces, photography and experimental films, will be presented as the fascinating succession that have changed our perception of some of the most important segments of the contemporary art practice.
With Srnec Retrospective Collection Marinko Sudac - following the exhibition “Marginal Specificities – Avant-garde Art of the Region 1918 – 1989” in the Varaždin Gallery Center in 2005 (transferred the same year to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Novi Sad and in 2007 to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka); further develops it proclaimed mission to research, explore and collect “art from the edge and edge of art”.
