"ARTISTS RESPOND" PROJECT: VASILY SLONOV (Russia)
18. April 2020

Vasily Slonov (b. 1969, Krasnoyarsk) works in many media – sculpture, installations, painting, objects etc. Slonov's works are highly satirical, engaged, offering a humorous, yet poignant critique of the Russian society. His works are filled with symbolism and innuendo, explained by the social circumstances. At times finding inspiration in the works of the early Russian avant-gardists, he combines his unique point of view.

Slonov sends us for the project greetings for Easter:
HAPPY EASTER! In Russia, a great holiday is coming — the Bright Resurrection of Christ! In Krasnoyarsk, almost everything is closed. Even cemeteries are closed to people. All people are quarantined at home. But I believe that any evil and any untruth is for a short time, and good and truth are forever! I want to send words of love and support to Croatia, and to the whole world! We are strong, we will overcome everything!

Artists Respond project was started by the Institute for the Research of the Avant-Garde and the Marinko Sudac Collection. Addressing the current global pandemic, the project aims to virtually present the thoughts and attitudes of neo-avant-garde artists, their energy and the message they have for the present moment. This is the moment in which the world as we know it is on hold and the moment in which we need optimism and solidarity more than ever. We wish for the public to welcome the creative energy of these artists - artists who are ready to point out the state of things, to respond with art and creativity, as they have done in all difficult times in the past.

Vasily Slonov was a participant of our Artist on Vacation project in 2018, organised by the Institute for the Research of the Avant-Garde and the Marinko Sudac Collection, with Valamar Riviera d.d. in whose facilities they reside in Poreč.
