Sérgio Leitão (b. 1971, Monte Estoril) is an artist whose work is based on contextual mixed media installations, crossing sculpture, painting and video, frequently including multiple projections with sculptural and graphic elements but also autonomous pieces in several media, sculptural interventions in public spaces, as well as performances. He has been approaching issues that explore connections between several fields of knowledge, from art and architecture, to literature, philosophy and history, among other territories.
For the project, Leitão sent his work O CONFINADO _ THE CONFINED MAN _ DER EINGESPERRTE MANN (2020). It was filmed in the outskirts of Vienna and presents us with an interrupted plot that deals with our current times. We ask ourselves: Who is this man? What is he doing there? Did he built the house himself? If so, why? For what purpose? What is happening? What happened before? What will happen next? It is up to the viewer to find out as the narrative is laid open.
"Artists Respond" project was started by the Institute for the Research of the Avant-Garde and the Marinko Sudac Collection. Addressing the current global pandemic, the project aims to virtually present the thoughts and attitudes of neo-avant-garde artists, their energy and the message they have for the present moment. This is the moment in which the world as we know it is on hold and the moment in which we need optimism and solidarity more than ever. We wish for the public to welcome the creative energy of these artists - artists who are ready to point out the state of things, to respond with art and creativity, as they have done in all difficult times in the past.
