"ARTISTS RESPOND" PROJECT: LIPA MILL (Serbia / Bosnia and Hercegovina)
19. June 2020

Lipa Mill (b. 1960, Ruma) is an artist whose performances are transmissions of energy into specific gestures, signs, objects. She often creates them in places with intense energies of past times and the elements of ritual and shaman ceremonies, mixing of the eros, sensuality, and sexuality. She was the founder and director of the art group EX NIHILO (1993 - 1995). In late 1992, she organized a "Dada Symposion" happening to mark 70 years from the publishing of the first issue of the Dada-Tank and Dada-Jazz magazines, and of the first Dada gathering in Novi Sad. Her current practice includes photo-performances in nature, photo-collages, and Icon-stellations – paintings crossing music notation, poetry and calligraphy.

Lipa Mill, who currently lives in B&H, where the coronavirus situation remains unsettled, sends us for the project two photo-performance made during this time - Spring Rites, and Daphne.

Artists Respond project was started by the Institute for the Research of the Avant-Garde and the Marinko Sudac Collection. Addressing the current global pandemic, the project aims to virtually present the thoughts and attitudes of neo-avant-garde artists, their energy and the message they have for the present moment. This is the moment in which the world as we know it is on hold and the moment in which we need optimism and solidarity more than ever. We wish for the public to welcome the creative energy of these artists - artists who are ready to point out the state of things, to respond with art and creativity, as they have done in all difficult times in the past.

Lipa Mill was a participant of our Artist on Vacation project in 2019, organised by the Institute for the Research of the Avant-Garde and the Marinko Sudac Collection, with Valamar Riviera d.d. in whose facilities they reside in Poreč.
