he members of the group Travelers (1922 – 1932) were: Dragutin Herjanić, Višnja Kranjčević, Zvonimir Megler, Vlado
Pilar, Josip Seissel, Miloš Somborski, Miho Schön, Čedomil Plavšić, and Dušan Plavšić.
hey took their name after the borrowed English word. he group was founded in 1922 when they irst performed
in the gymnastic hall of the II. Realgymnasium in Zagreb. he act, the selection of texts, direction and full
mise–en–scene were based on the principle of collage, Dadaist thinking and familiarity with Constructivism.
he members were educated young man from the aluent Zagreb families. Aware of the changes that rose after
the WWI ended, they became critical toward the middle class society and values. hey performed their action daily;
they identiied with art and anticipated the essence of artistic practices that come ifty years later. he group was
active for ten years. he members remained close to the end of their lives, but went their separate ways, achieving
success in their respective professions (from medicine to architecture and Law).
He interests of Travelers have incorporated mass culture, the American ilm, photography, modern music (mostly
jazz), fashion, cartoons and visual communication. hey were drawn to the anarchist-like ideas from the contem-
porary movements of Dada, Futurism, Expressionism, Constructivism and Surrealism. hey kept abreast with the
foreign avant–garde journals – e.g. the German Der Blaue Reiter and the Russian Mir. heir recently discovered
legacy shows that this local avant-garde had managed to survive Constructivist, Dadaist and surrealist schisms, the
police repression and bourgeois conservatism.he multi-media, performance and interdisciplinary approaches were
thus practiced much earlier than what is usually thought by placing their beginnings in the mid-60’s
of the past century.
